My husband and I are traveling several times this fall and winter, North Carolina, Oklahoma, New York and Hawaii. All I wear are riding clothes, blue jeans, breeches, T-shirts, etc.... I just bought five co-coordinating pieces, coral in color, soft easy traveling cotton/poly spandex. No pants, just one maxi skirt. I have two pair of Capris, tan and darker tan. I really like the looks of palazzo pants but I'm not sure if they are just for skinny young women. Who wears them? I think I would do better in a solid color black, blue or brown instead of the wild patterns I keep seeing but if I could find one not too wild with coral to match my other stuff I might be tempted. For traveling in the notheast and Oklahoma, I have a couple old sweater sets and casual pants that will work. Although we will be going to Manhattan and see a play and visit a couple museums if we can. I'm tempted to purchase something new for that. It will be Thanksgiving and Christmas. So fashionistas! Help me! I'm a size 12/14. Not obese but definitely not a skinny girl.

Donna, I think you could wear palazzo pants easily. It is my opinion, that capri pants are "harder" to wear and look good. My fashion advisor (the rare male that notices..haha) tells me capris are for teenage girls, everybody else tends to make us short and squatty looking. Well, maybe that is just me...haha.
Now, in NYC, you can wear whatever is comfortable as lots of tourists dress very casually. However, if you want to "go for it" it is an amazing place to wear fun fashion!
I am all about layers - I wear tank tops with overshirts. I like either skirts or skinny jeans. I found NYC very hot in early September when we went last year so it was nice to be able to put something on and just peel or add layers as needed. I love wearing heels and NYC has lots of ladies wearing high heels but I don't know how they do it... busy, uneven sidewalks, subway stairs ... wear comfy shoes! I loved NYC - can't wait to go back!

I agree with the palazzo pants - I just ordered a pair for a "dressy" work party (not formal, just "dressy" ) with a fancy top. I think it will look good and sort of hide my thick legs. With the right cut, they look like a maxi skirt, so if you are good with your maxi skirt, you should be good with the palazzo pants. I would not go with a wild print though. I got mine through Amazon - I cannot find any locally. Watch out for "gaucho pants" they have a lot of fullness at the waist and hip and often show up in searches for palazzo pants. Palazzos, while they are not really fitted up top, get their fullness below the hip.

The palazzo pants work if your heavy in the legs really well. Or if your not riding a bike. LOL My Mom who was heavy was a firm believer in them, and she was more of a size 22+. Go with what you think looks good, cause if you think you look good, you usually do. And try on the clothes, I always take a picture because I can really SEE what I look like instead of what I think I look like in it, of course then there are those outfits that don't even get to picture time. If you have a friend who can help you its even better, and more fun. Just don't take the hubby-they get so bored they will tell you everything looks good so they can get the heck out of there. LOL Oh and I tend to use the prints on top, well except for the wild leggings I couldn't resist. A pair of leggings is great with a long top, or even a not so long top. And they are great for riding bikes. LOL

Yeah, I wear them with not so long shirts too, my rear is one of my better items I have been told. LOL

I have to take back my statement about palazzos! I tried some on today and there is just so much fabric for a short person! (I am 5'4.5") I tried on a maxi skirt and it's a much better look.

I don't think the capri pants will work for you in the northern states if you go in the winter- great for Hawaii, though. Thanksgiving and Christmas are cold in New York. If you are buying something new I would go to a fairly upscale- Dillard's or Macy's and find a saleslady that looks nice and ask her to help you pick out a couple of outfits for your events. You might need dressy boots as well, and certainly a warm, dressy coat.
This sounds like a really really fun fall/winter for you. Congrats and we need lots of pictures.

*off to google palazzo pants*
My only suggestion is wear something comfortable that you won't be picking at all day.
