OK - spring is here and it is time to think about giving shots. What shots do you give? Should you give a tetanus shot yearly?
Thanks!

We are doing shots at the barn tomorrow, I can let you know. But I think that tetanus is yearly.

We give the "4-ways" with Tetanus, Eastern and Western encephalitis? (sleeping sickness) and equine influenza. Dr Mike told me they added some newer strains to the influenza part. Plus West Nile and rabies (never used to give rabies, but it has cropped up right around us)
I know some folks say annual vaccines aren't needed but so far our horses never have any issue with the shots and most of those are diseases that are often fatal so I'm not taking chances.
I don't vaccinate for Strangles or the other stuff that just interferes with riding for a month or so if they get it. Since I'm not boarding I can do that. I can understand a busy barn manager choosing to require shots for something that is pretty contagious and messes with everyone's schedules.

We don't vaccinate annually on the older horses. Ruger (the coming yearling) is a different story he's had 2 doses of Vetera Gold and rabies over the winter and will get a booster when he gets ahem... the deed done which will be once things dry up a bit.... so maybe fall at this rate LOL. (did the first set myself ordered the 2 doses for him and a bottle of rabies vaccinefrom United Vet. Gave Ruger his and the rotation horses that were due per "my" schedule their rabies and the barn cats got their rabies updated as well.)

I looked up what I gave in December: Eastern/Western Venezuelan Encephalitis Rhino Influenza Tetanus Rabies West Nile
And I think that's what he got today as well. I need to check from last July, I'm pretty sure he got the vacc for Lyme, and I think he got the vacc. for Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) - it's a serious disease when they get it, but it's only endemic along the east coast as far as I know. The vet says we don't see much of it any more but figures it's largely due to the vacc. Since he got so many today, we will wait to do the PHF when she comes back to booster
For Strangles, I think he's old enough (12 years) and has traveled plenty (exposure to other horses) that I don't think it's an issue for him.
