It's the concept of diluting the dirty oil with clean oil and floating the dirt away, leaving only clean oil behind. It doesn't strip out the natural oils of your skin but will let any excess leave with the dirty oils.
I find it takes a little longer (but not lots longer) than using shampoo - shampoo just dissolves and strips all your oils and removes them along with the dirt, and it works fairly fast. Using conditioner or oils to do it, you need to work it into your hair and scalp and after that, use plenty of water to float up the dirty stuff and rinse away the excess oils. For now, my hair is a little below my jaw and I'm letting it grow out to at least get a ponytail to keep it out of my face. Not sure if it will take much more time to clean.
Sheryl - you've got long hair, does the no-poo wash seem to take much more time than shampoo?
