Snaff- maybe you're right. they only seem to eat the hollyhock leaves. The flowers are fine - they are healthy plants but the leaves are all lacey. Maybe I should look at the leaves differently.

We have had the beetles now for about a week. Last year I sprayed our yard so I didn't have to worry about the grubs next year and then moles. This year I haven't done it yet. We don't have a cover on our pool and I clean about 20 beetles out of our filter basket each day...YUCK.
Guess it's time to go to the store and start spraying again. I didn't do our garden last year and it wasn't so bad so I may do all but it again this year.

That lacy/skeleton look is sort of a trademark of the way the Japanese Beetles eat leaves. Our elm is total lace when they're done. But Hollyhocks are not on their list of 'preferred' foods. So I wonder what eats just those and skeletonizes them? Weird... It sucks that we go right from beetle season to horsefly season. We've had some early horseflies, we usually don't really get them 'til just a touch later. We go from May Flies and tick/chigger/firefly (yes, I STILL call them that though people here look at me like I'm nuts)/cicada (which I love the last two bugs personally) season, to June bugs (a brown Beetle that other than being brown, looks like the Japanese ones) to Japanese Beetles, to horseflies, and finally those ladybug thingies end us up in October. Oh, yeah, spider season is mid-late summer and fall.

Sheryl, I did some looking for the ladybug lookalikes, and can see where the confusion came from. In my search I saw that at least one other person referred to them as Japanese biting beetles, which may be what they called them at GH, but they are Asian (Lady) beetles. www.epestsupply.com/asian_beetles.phpBeasts, weren't they?

I think the ones that are eating my hollyhocks are flea beetles. They really go after eggplant, too. I've sure seen Japanese beetles on them too, but not yet this year. And the leaves are for sure lace. Brown lace now. *sigh*

you know those cute deer I get photos of, hanging out in my back yard? Well, now they are eating the leaves off of my tomatoes... right next to the sunroom. I sprinkled some stuff around, hopefully that will make the area less pleasant for them. I'm thinking of getting some kind of cougar urine scent to put around

t-leigh you certainly have the 'pests' seasons down pat. Yes I do! We just didn't have these bug problems anywhere close to this in California, and I've learned since moving here to keep my mouth SHUT when outside during the warm season.
