I just finished reading Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss. My daughter gave me this book for Christmas last year. I had a stack of books on my nightstand to read, and I'm weird -- I have to stay in order. Plus, I thought the title sounded sort of sappy and hadn't heard of the book before, so it got put on the bottom of my book pile.

Well, I finally got to it, and it was WONDERFUL! It's set in 1917 in Eastern Oregon. Most of the young boys in the ranching communities had gone off to fight in WWI. The main character is a young girl who sets out on her horse from the Umatilla area down into the Elwha River Valley and gets a job breaking horses. She ends up breaking horses for a few ranches within a several-mile radius, and the characters and the side stories of her different customers are interesting and rich.

As I was reading, I was thinking that the author really had her facts together - there was a lot of good, correct information in there regarding the training techniques and the way horses think. Then I read in the credits at the end that Lesley Neuman was the source that the author used for her horsey information, and it all made sense. I've met Lesley Neuman and watched her at a mustang demo, and she knows her stuff.

Anyway, it was a good book, and a good read for cold days when we aren't doing as much riding!

Ohh I will have to look for that one. We had one of those days here today-although house cleaning kept me busy. But it sure feels good to have it clean finally. I haven't had the energy for 3 weeks. Waking up to a spider crawling on my blankets sure can give it to you. Turned to find a slipper to kill it and dang if it was GONE. Never did find it but got all bedding washed, cleaned and the whole house vacuumed.
